The Miracle Morning: 5 reasons to try the early rising habit

For the past few months, I have been implementing the miracle morning into my routine. I fell off the wagon a bit the past couple weeks, so I have recently been aiming to focus only on waking up early, and then incorporate the miracle morning life savers later on, once my morning habit is set. You can read more about the miracle morning and the Life SAVERS habits in Hal Elrod's book, The Miracle Morning.

1. Quiet

There is a sense of stillness and calm that occurs early in the morning, about an hour before the majority of your world wakes up. For me, that stillness comes at 8 am, even more so at 7:30 or even 7 am.

The timing of this quiet may vary. If you are a parent who has to wake your kids up for school at 7 am, then 7:30 am probably is not your quiet morning time.

2. Schedule

There is a sense of comfort in waking up at the same time and going to bed on a schedule. For me, in college, I have a variety of classes and commitments that are time specific. When I write out my schedule for the day, I usually have 2-4 places I have to be at a specific time. Having a set bedtime and wake up time protects my day like bookends, giving me a concrete idea of how to manage my time.

 3. Proactivity

By waking up early and going to bed early, you choose to be proactive in your day's activities, rather than reactive. Even if a 9 am - 11 pm day is the same length as a 7 am - 9 pm day, you will begin to live your life in a proactive manner. If I have a paper due at 11 pm on Sunday, I will work in the morning and the afternoon, finishing the paper ahead of schedule, rather than afternoon and night.

The work gets done in both scenarios, but the morning worker will enjoy a sense of calm and control.

4. Social Benefits

By waking up before the majority of your peers, you will be giving yourself time to settle into your day and take personal time before entering the the world of commitments and social stress. If you walk into your morning class knowing you have already completed the day's work, you are giving yourself the space to enjoy life without assignments and worries plaguing your mind. By giving yourself productivity time at the beginning of the day, you leave the rest of the day free to spend with your friends and community.

5. Habit

I know what you are thinking-- look, this sounds all fine and dandy, but I am not a morning person. Or maybe you are thinking, sure, this may work for some people, but I am a night owl. I urge you to try this for just one week. Ideally, it's a month, but it feels less daunting if you know that alarm will be blaring for 7 days instead of 30.

Once it becomes a habit, or at least feels a little bit more comfortable, you will have a better sense of if these benefits are worth it. Don't knock it till you try it.

If you are planning on testing out an early rising habit, I urge you to also set a bedtime. It is important that you maintain your sleep quality when practicing the habit, even if it feels slightly unnatural to go to sleep at 9:30 pm.
